The Power of Brain Injury

‘It’s amazing how crazy brain injury is and how unique it is to each individual’ Dr Shonpal

This quote was taken from my last group session understanding brain injury. My father, previously fit and well, developed covid-19 related strokes - in fact he had six strokes and has had a prolonged rehabilitation.

I’ve seen and counselled many patients after strokes but there is a huge difference between being a doctor and a patient. My father has had cognitive issues, often called ‘the hidden disease’ because it’s not seen. The impact on any patient is often traumatic but we often neglect the family. Yes, brain injury changes not only the patient but all the dynamics involved. It is so easy to discuss this and say yes I understand but do we really understand.

The brain is such an amazing organ and we don’t even know most of what it does! A brain scan can show you what area is damaged but research shows scans don’t show you the real impact. Even a small stroke can have a huge impact on disease or a larger stroke can cause minimal damage. The point is brain injury is unique to everyone and we never know the impact until we see it for ourselves in our own lives.
