What’s Behind The Ongoing ‘Yoga Fad’

Many people first got a taste of breathwork on their yoga mat or meditation pillow. Now, increasing numbers of people are seeking out full-fledged classes on breathing for better health.
While yoga may look like just a couple of body-bending exercises to the normal eye, a lot more goes on under the skin when you twist your limbs and consciously breathe.

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word which means ‘to connect’ Yoga allows us to connect to ourselves and become more present. In the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient Hindu text, yoga is described as a yoga ladder composed of three parts:

Jnana yoga (knowledge)
Dhyana yoga (meditation)
Bhakti yoga (devotional)

The ‘yoga’ people most people are part of dhyana which most people know as postures and poses (asanas) and regulated breathing (pranayama). There are also other yoga but they mainly fall into dhyana yoga.

Studies have shown that yoga allows a greater activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and relaxed state) as opposed to the sympathetic part (fight or flight). It has shown to enhance muscular strength and body flexibility, promote and improve respiratory and cardiovascular function, improve sleep patterns and even help in chronic back pain!

Systematic review and meta-analysis have found that movement-based yoga improves the mental health of people living with depression, post-traumatic stress, schizophrenia, anxiety, alcohol dependence and bipolar, with the benefits increasing the more yoga they practiced.

Yoga isn’t a fad and is definitely here to stay. Find out DrShonpal top three tips in my latest video: https://fb.watch/4j27SdpQtj/
